EXPERT OPINION BY DONNEBRA MCCLENDON

There is a growing obsession with likability in leadership.
Professionals are constantly being told to soften their tone, reduce their presence, minimize their confidence, or package themselves in ways that make others more comfortable.
Leadership Prescription from Dr. Donnebra: Authentic leadership is not about becoming more digestible. It is about becoming more aligned.
As a leadership consultant and organizational strategist, I have seen far too many professionals exhaust themselves trying to perform leadership instead of embodying it.
The pressure to appear “polished” often causes leaders to disconnect from their actual personality, communication style, values, and voice.
But the strongest leaders are not performing.
They are grounded.
Authentic leadership is not loud for the sake of attention. It is not performative vulnerability. It is not forced relatability.
It is the ability to lead with clarity, integrity, emotional intelligence, and self-awareness without abandoning yourself in the process.
3 Characteristics of Authentic Leaders
1. They Lead from Alignment, Not Approval
Authentic leaders do not build their leadership identity around external validation.
They understand that leadership requires difficult conversations, courageous decisions, and the ability to remain grounded even when everyone does not agree.
2. They Create Psychological Safety
Authentic leadership is not just about personal confidence.
It is about creating environments where others feel respected, valued, and empowered to contribute meaningfully.
Strong leaders understand that people perform better when they feel seen.
3. They Refuse to Shrink Themselves to Fit Dysfunctional Cultures
Some organizational cultures reward silence, conformity, and performative professionalism.
Authentic leaders challenge unhealthy norms instead of becoming consumed by them.
And yes—that level of leadership often makes people uncomfortable.
But growth frequently requires disruption.
Many professionals, particularly women and underrepresented leaders, spend years navigating environments where they feel pressure to continuously code-switch, overperform, or minimize their confidence to avoid negative perceptions.
That is exhausting.
Leadership should not require professionals to abandon their humanity.
Leadership Prescription from Dr. Donnebra: The right rooms will not require you to become smaller to belong.
Authenticity is not weakness.
It is sustainable leadership.
The leaders who create the greatest impact are rarely the ones trying to imitate everyone else.
They are the ones courageous enough to lead from a place of alignment.
And in today’s workplace culture, that level of leadership matters more than ever.
