EXPERT OPINION BY DONNEBRA MCCLENDON
There’s a growing misconception in the workplace that being authentic means you can show up however you want—without regard for professionalism, preparation, or presence. Let’s clear that up right now:
Authenticity is not an excuse for being unpolished, unprepared, or unprofessional.
Bringing your true self to work doesn’t mean disregarding workplace etiquette, ignoring dress codes, or showing up late to meetings. It means owning your voice, your perspective, and your presence—while still honoring the standards of excellence that define true leadership. Authenticity should elevate you, not limit you.
Be You, But Be Ready
Success requires both presence and preparation. You can reject code-switching, embrace your individuality, and still be strategic, polished, and professional. In fact, the most powerful leaders do both. They bring their full selves to the table and come prepared with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to own the room.
What This Looks Like in Action:
Speaking up—but knowing your facts - Authenticity doesn’t replace expertise. Your voice is valuable, but when paired with preparation, it becomes undeniable.
Being comfortable in your own skin—but dressing for the part you play - First impressions matter. Professionalism isn’t about “fitting in”—it’s about showing you take yourself and your role seriously.
Bringing your full personality—but knowing when to listen and adapt - Confidence isn’t about overpowering a room. It’s about knowing when to lead and when to learn.
Authenticity + Excellence = Influence
If you want to command respect, create impact, and open doors for others, you need both authenticity and preparation. One without the other limits your ability to influence.
The world doesn’t just need more people who show up. It needs more people who show up ready.
So, be bold. Be yourself—and always be excellent.
